New to Massage Therapy? Here is What You Need to Know Before Your First Session

Starting massage therapy and don’t know what to expect? Many people have questions about how it works, what to prepare, and what benefits they might experience. This guide answers the most common questions about massage therapy to help you feel confident and ready for your first session.

What Should I Expect During My First Massage Session?

Your first session starts with a brief consultation. The therapist will ask about your health history, any pain or discomfort, and your goals for the massage. This helps them tailor the treatment to your needs.

The therapist will leave the room so you can get on the table. You will be covered with a sheet and blanket. You can expect to undress to your comfort level, typically down to your underwear, and the therapist will only expose the area being worked on. We do not work on bikini areas.

Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?

Massage therapy is generally safe for most people. Some may experience mild soreness or fatigue after a session, similar to how muscles feel after exercise. Drinking water afterward helps flush out toxins released during the massage.

People with certain conditions should consult a healthcare provider before massage, including those with:

  • Blood clots or deep vein thrombosis

  • Severe osteoporosis

  • Skin infections or open wounds

  • Certain heart conditions or cancer

Your therapist should be informed about any medical issues to adjust the treatment safely.

How Often Should I Get a Massage?

The frequency depends on your goals and lifestyle. For general relaxation and stress relief, once a month may be enough. If you have chronic pain or injury, weekly or biweekly sessions might be recommended.

Some people schedule massages around specific events, like after intense workouts or during stressful periods, to support recovery and relaxation.

How Do I Choose the Right Type of Massage?

There are many massage styles, each suited to different needs. We took the guess work out for you. Here at Stella Spa, we offer customized massage options. Just book the appointment, tell us what your treatment goal is and we will do the rest.

What Should I Wear to a Massage?

Wear comfortable, loose clothing to your appointment. You will be asked to undress to your comfort level, usually down to underwear. The therapist will drape you with a sheet to keep you covered except for the area being worked on.

If you feel uneasy about undressing, mention this to your therapist. They can adjust the session to keep you comfortable.

How Do I Prepare for a Massage Session?

To get the most from your massage:

  • Avoid heavy meals or alcohol before the session

  • Arrive 10 minutes early to relax and fill out any necessary forms

  • Communicate any pain, injuries, or preferences to your therapist

  • Remove jewelry and avoid applying lotions or oils before the appointment

  • Avoid perfumes and colognes before your trip to the spa

Can Massage Therapy Help With Specific Health Issues?

Massage can support many conditions by improving circulation, reducing muscle tension, and promoting relaxation. It may help with:

  • Back and neck pain

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Stress and anxiety

  • Muscle soreness from exercise

  • Limited range of motion

While massage can complement medical treatment, it should not replace professional medical advice or care.

What If I Have Special Needs or Concerns?

If you have allergies, skin sensitivities, or specific health conditions, inform your therapist before the session. They can adjust oils, lotions, and techniques accordingly.

If you feel uncomfortable at any time, speak up. A good therapist will respect your boundaries and make changes to ensure your comfort.

Massage therapy offers many benefits, from easing pain to reducing stress. Knowing what to expect and how to prepare helps you get the most from your sessions. If you have questions beyond this guide, don’t hesitate to ask your therapist—they are there to support your health and comfort.

After your massage, one of the most important things you can do is hydrate well. Massage helps stimulate circulation, lymphatic flow, and the release of stored tension in the muscles — and your body needs quality water to support recovery afterward.

I always recommend avoiding single-use plastic water bottles when possible. Heat and time can cause plastics to leach unwanted chemicals into the water, and many people notice they simply feel better drinking from glass or copper vessels instead.

Copper water bottles have been used for centuries in Ayurvedic wellness practices. When water is stored in copper for several hours, trace amounts of copper may naturally infuse into the water. Copper is associated with antimicrobial properties and may help support digestion, immunity, and overall wellness when used appropriately. They’re also a beautiful reminder to slow down and make hydration part of your self-care ritual.

Another great addition to your post-massage routine is magnesium support. Magnesium helps relax muscles, calm the nervous system, support sleep, and reduce soreness after bodywork. One of the easiest ways to replenish magnesium is with an Epsom salt bath or topical magnesium spray.

Thank you for trusting your body and wellness journey. Your first massage is just the beginning of learning how powerful rest, touch, and intentional self-care can truly be.
